The Remarkable Stantons and the "Magnificent Dwelling"

The Remarkable Stantons by Toni Saldivar, PhD

The Stanton-Bonham House: An Oxford and Miami University Landmark by Stephen Gordon, Administrator, William Holmes McGuffey Museum

This exhibit is based on an earlier exhibit on display in the McGuffey Museum that examines the house that Robert L. Stanton built and his life as a dedicated leader and educator.  The exhibit also traces the lives of some members of his family: his brother, Henry Brewster Stanton, fiery orator of the American Anti-Slavery Society and politician; his son, Robert Brewster (Bob) Stanton, intrepid explorer and civil engineer; and, most important historically, his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, founder of the woman suffrage movement in 1848 whose work would lead to women's winning the constitutional right to vote in 1920.  This exhibit tells the stories of these remarkable Stantons and coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of Freedom Summer 1964.  That summer students from across the nation came to Oxford, Ohio, to train at Western College for voter registration drives in Mississippi.  Many people of conscience in the generations before them, including the Stanton activists and reformers, fostered the ideals passed on to those brave, young civil rights workers.
